      I was sleeping well for about 2 months averaging 5-6 hours a night without any pills. I went out on July 4th weekend, had about 3-5 drinks, and didn’t sleep that night but I slept ok the following night. Since then, I haven’t had a goodnight of sleep. I went to bed at the same time feeling somewhat sleepy. It’s been about 5 days with little or no sleep. I started applying sleep restrictions again last night, and I had no sleep (perhaps due to a sore throat).

      I am applying sleeping restriction again tonight but I am also considering some sleep med to help. Is that a good idea? Or should I stick with just sleep restriction?

      I don’t feel like I’m having any sleep anxiety, and I’m not frustrated laying in bed. The past few nights, I tried to get out of bed if I’m not sleeping.

      Any advice would be helpful.

      Thanks,

        @Rayj83,

        Since sleep medications don’t tackle the root cause of our sleep issues – thoughts and behaviors – it might be more beneficial to focus your attention on what you think might be causing a recurrence of insomnia. What did you change that led to your success during that 2 month period – maybe revisit what you implemented then? If you applied the CBT-I techniques consistently during those 2 months and that led to 5-6 hours of sleep, might that be helpful to you again? Do you think you’re going to bed before you’re actually sleepy enough for sleep to occur?

          Thanks for your prompt response. As my sleep got better, I stopped using the CBT-I techniques regularly. I did try to go to bed earlier than usual, and I was not sleepy enough. I have gotten away with it before without any issues. Perhaps, I need to accept the new normal and use them regularly to prevent this from happening again. I plan to use the techniques that had worked previously, and let sleep come.

            I think you’ve just discovered a cause of your recent sleep disruption – going to bed when you’re not sleepy. Also, if you’re not have anxious thoughts or frustrated lying in bed, you might consider remaining in bed as long as conditions for sleep are good. I think that’s a great plan, @Rayj83!
