I am on the struggle bus. My pharmacy has been out of the Zolpidem I usually take since last Thursday, 3 nights ago. I’ve been wanting to go off sleep meds for a long time. Lucky me, I am getting to try being off them. It’s been very hard. My questions are, how long does rebound insomnia typically last? I’ve been taking Zolpidem for 15 years. Is it ok to drink alcohol to get some sleep instead of getting zero sleep? When will this get easier?

All forms of insomnia typically last for as long as we fight them. In other words, the more we resist insomnia and the more we try to make a certain amount or type of sleep happen through effort, the more difficult we are likely to find sleep. Has that been your experience?

As for mixing alcohol with zolpidem, I suspect that’s not a good idea — but it would be best to get an answer from a licensed healthcare provider.
