Hello all, I’ve suffered with insomnia for 4 years now and have been through the mill of taking meds and meditating. I have been struggling recently and this is affecting my life now more than ever. My Dr prescribed zopliclone 7.5 tried that for 8 days with not much luck just 2 hours sleep every other night. Nearly had a break down and phoned my doctor again for him to prescribe me tamazapam, this didn’t help at all. Now my phyc Dr has upped my antipsychotic  (arapriprazol) and that’s not helping me sleep. I’m at my end limits, I just need sleep guys please any help would be appreciated!

The only other obvious option in terms of medication would be a Benzodiazepine like Lorazapem but you really do not want to go down that route for more than a couple of weeks…

edit, sorry just realize you have already tried a benzo with temazepam.

I am scared to death myself of getting addicted to these meds, especially benzos. However, I was taking one .25mg Xanax a week just to make sure I had one good night of sleep a week. Unfortunately, I think it quit working but again, I don’t want to increase the dose and risk going down that road. I pretty much now have to rely on melatonin and I don’t think I could sleep without it. Besides, I think Xanax is known for preventing a deep sleep so not sure how much it was helping me anyway. I also take low dose doxepin every now and then to help me get back to sleep when I wake up. It does good in that regard but I suspect it will stop working soon like some other meds have done for me.

Thank you for your replies guys, it really means the world to me that I’m not alone in this. Alas the doctor wrote me another weeks worth of tamazapam and diazepam to try help… and I just feel like crying, I’m frightened of a break down guys. What’s melatonin? I will certainly bring this up with my doctor and see if this could help. X

Believe me Lisajayne, you are not alone in this. Melatonin is a natural substance made by the body that is secreted by the body when it starts getting dark to tell the body that it is time to go to sleep. So while it may help you fall asleep, it is not a sleeping pill. When sold in stores, it is synthetically made. I’m not sure where you live. If you live in the United States, it is an Over the Counter supplement. If you live in some countries in Europe, I heard you need a prescription for it. You can Google it and there will be a ton of information on it. I wish you luck in your quest for sleep.

You need a prescription for it in the UK but some USA companies will ship it over here.

Have you spoken to your doctor about CBT-I to see if it would be an appropriate option for you?

People with chronic insomnia do not have a problem with melatonin production or regulation, so melatonin supplements are not an effective treatment for chronic insomnia. Furthermore, in the United States, the sale of melatonin is not regulated and research has found that many times the contents of the bottle are not the same as what is described on the label.

I know what you are saying Martin but Melatonin does seem to get me over the hump of getting to sleep. I don’t know if that means I have other problems or not.

If melatonin is helping you, it’s entirely down to the placebo effect. The only evidence supporting melatonin use is some weak to moderate evidence that it can help with some circadian rhythm disorders — and insomnia is not a circadian rhythm disorder.

There are a number of additional reasons why melatonin is not an effective treatment for insomnia. In fact, I hope to record a video of this soon and I’ll put it on the YouTube channel when it’s ready.

If you think melatonin is working for you, by all means, stick with it — but try to avoid the temptation to attribute any success you have sleeping to the melatonin, because the melatonin pill is not what is making you sleep!

I don’t doubt what you say. I was wondering if I was just using it more as a crutch than an actual remedy. I’ll be interested in seeing the video.
