Quick intro. Insomnia kicked in for me in August. One day I could sleep normally, the next I couldn't sleep more than 3 hours in a row and woke up wide awake, and it'd usually take 2-4 hours of turning and tossing. It's been really messy since then. I got sleeping pills to try and resync me for about 3 weeks but I quit last Friday and things got back to awful. They never worked great anyway as I'd still wake up way too early.
Saturday was horrendous. With terrible headaches, especially in the evening. Since I couldn't do anything productive, I spent the day doing online research on every possible cause for insomnia. My main suspect now me having messed up my electrolyte balance in the Summer while being on a practically salt free diet and drinking/sweating a lot because I jog every day. Another thing is the light from my laptop since I'm a web developer working from home and easily spend 10 hours a day on it. According to some studies, it turns out only 5 hours a day can cause sleep disorder. It would have to do with the light temperature. One site recommended a free program that adapt the monitor light to the time of the day. Been on it for 2 days and I feel a lot less hyper in the evening. Also got back to normal salt intake.
After the changes I made, last night was better. I still took half a pill to fall asleep but slept 5 hours which hadn't happened in a long time, and I'm feeling tired and relaxed this morning as opposed to a zombie on amphetamine. I'm keeping my fingers crossed my circ cycle is slowly recovering. Still looking forward to reading about everyone's experience and tips.
October 18, 2010 at 6:54 pm #11730Welcome aboard, Dagaz. It's great to have you as a member, and thank you for introducing yourself.
I've not heard a link between electrolyte balance and insomnia before – did you read about that somewhere? If so, it would be great if you could share the source.
I've written about blue light and insomnia on the Insomnia Land blog before; it's the prime suspect when it comes to insomnia and computer use.

It would be interesting to hear how you find that monitor light software over the long term. Perhaps just switching off the computer a couple of hours before bed would be more effective?
Anyway, I'll draw to a close for now. I'm sure you'll find lots of tips, advice and support here – and hopefully you'll have some fun, too. I look forward to reading more of your posts and getting to know you better.

Thank you for the welcome, Martin. I hadn't read your blog post. Going to go through the archive for what I've missed. It's very hard for me to stay off the computer in the evening as I'm working on a long-term project that's a little behind schedule but I switching it off earlier is something I'd recommend to those who can afford it.
I did read about the electrolyte issue. It was an article by a doc who related one of his patient's insomnia bout to his drinking abnormal quantity of waters. It was something like 2-3 liters a day. I haven't bookmarked it but I'll try googling for it again.
Seems like a very nice place you have. Looking forward to getting to know you and other members.
October 20, 2010 at 4:16 am #11732Hi Dagaz73
welcome, wow I am also keen to know that post on insomnia and the low salt electrolyte intake. It was interesting what you wrote about the blue light
ummm need to catch up on Martins blogs myself.
look forward to reading new bits of info you find on your web adventures and good luck with your business and work load
Oh what part of France are you from?
October 24, 2010 at 3:39 pm #11733I hope your insomnia cycle improves. I think most of us here can relate to what you're talking about, Dagaz73. Sleeping medicine has always been a mixed bag for me…I find Ambien and Valium work the best, but tolerance builds up quickly. I also have trazadone, but that one doesn't work as well. Good luck getting some rest, and welcome.
