      hello,

My name is Sophia and I live in Northern Canada, land of the midnight sun, which is not conducive to sleep whatsoever. This time of year it is just barely dark for about 2 hours before the sun is coming up. i am having a horrible time falling asleep lately and have a lot of anxieties about it. I have been taking sleeping pills because the idea of not sleeping is just so darn terrifying to me. I don't know why, this is an anxiety issue that I am trying my best to work through. the health professionals on my health care team always say, “so you don't sleep one night, not a big deal” but for me it is! I wish i could just let it go but all i want in this world is to have a 8 hours of sleep every night. but perhaps i just need to learn that my body may not need that many hours.

anyway, glad to have found this site! i just googled insomnia support groups and this came up. I hope to learn from other users and get tips and hopefully share some ideas.

      Sophia

        Hi Sophia welcome to Insomnialand

I'm sorry to hear about the anxiety you face when you are not able to sleep. It must be difficult when there is so much daylight. I know I have found it difficult at times with light. I have had to make sure not even a tiny speck enters my room. Its like my brain gets switched on and I cannot shut it out.

Have you tried relaxation techniques like yoga, it might be worth your while to check out some of the blogs and post on Insomnia , you might find it helpful

all the best and nice to have you here.

Hi Sophia and welcome to Insomnia Land. I too, reluctantly do things like take “sleeping pills” (which somehow get a bad rap, IMO) sparingly, prescribed; and anxiety is often a big contributor to falling asleep, staying asleep, etc. My doctor suggested I take one of my anxiety medications (I'm on two) before bed, to mellow me out. Have you talked to your doctor about that??? I found it really helped–downside was, that I developed tolerance to BOTH medications very fast, and had to reevaulate. But short-term, it might at least bring back some zzzz's and sanity.

Hope you enjoy the Insomnia Land community.

I do feel that this summer is harder than last summer. All last year I had no sleeping problems and this year has been more tough in many ways. but the long days do wreck people's sleeping schedules. who wants to go to bed when midnight looks like 4 in the afternoon?

That's a good point – reminds me of the movie 'Insomnia'!

I spent a few weeks in Alaska during the summer and when I went back south it took me a couple of days before I could sleep again. I worked out that it was because I had started to feel uneasy about falling asleep in the dark!!

Fortunately it didn't take me too long to get used to the 'traditional' cycle of night and day.
