      Hi All,

I am under treatment for Obstructive Sleep Apnoea (OSA) and am a very inefficient sleeper. For years I thought I had insomnia but my Doctor would only treat me for depression. Depression is now totally gone now that OSA has been treated properly. The depression was not the problem, it was the symptom..!

I was only finally diagnosed correctly 4 years ago at the age of 61. In addition to the CPAP machine I use, I am using a Philips Sleepwave device, taking Circadin (Melatonin) 2mg to reset body clock and 2 of Neurontin 300mg for Restless Leg Syndrome each night.

I am hoping that I can pickup some clues and info as to what others are doing.

      Regards,

      BobxT

          Hi Martin,

I think I qualify as a occasional insomniac, particularly in high heat nights in summer (as now)..

My sleep is a lot better, but there is nothing worse than feeling like I have not slept at all and been staring at the ceiling all night long.

My Sleep Doctor says I am actually sleeping but I am not aware of having been asleep. He also says I have been suffering from OSA for most of my life and my body does not know what sleep “is”. He will not prescribe sleeping pills. I went regularly to a hospital overnight sleep clinic each year and the results say I am getting sleep up to 5 hours or so. I feel I need more though and am confused as to why I have no conscious awareness of having slept at all.

I practice sleep hygiene and really only feel like I have slept, somewhere near properly, in winter. In summer I have the air conditioner set to 16 degrees C at night (it won't go lower). I prefer to have a winter bedroom temperature of 15 degrees C.

I am slightly overweight at 91kg and trying to get it down further, more for the OSA reasons.

I am open to any suggestions.

          Regards,

          BobxT

            Hi Bob,

I just joined the community and am getting to know it a bit, by reading through the intro's.

In mine, I included a question on the Sleepwave device you are referring to. What are your experiences with it? Is it any use, worth the price?

It sounds like you have several causes for insomnia, bit more complicated then most. It would be good to tackle the weight problem, as you are suggesting.

For the heat problem, I could recommend you move to Holland… (until climate change takes over here)
