I’ve lived with insomnia for over 20 years, brought on initially by antidepressants. I’ve been using an online app called Sleepio to learn about CBTi. It helped me make progress, but not a permanent improvement. I’m working my way through Sleepio for the second time, but have not made the best decisions re getting out of bed when I’m not sleeping.

I’ve also found it hard to recognise when I’m sleepy tired, not just fatigued. Even when I get up during the night, I find it difficult to get back to bed at the right time.

I’ve been listening to the Insomnia Coach podcasts, and am getting great information about how how to manage my nights. I’m hoping for a big improvement.

At the moment, my biggest challenge seems to be not nodding off to sleep in front of TV early in the night, as I’m so tired, robbing me of the sleep drive I need to build.

Welcome to the forum! It’s great to hear you’re exploring CBT-I to help resolve your sleep concerns. Progress is still progress and as long as you remain committed to the techniques, you’ll continue to experience results!

Staying awake until your sleep window begins can certainly be difficult. Have you experimented with standing while watching TV or walking around inside your home during commercials to help with remaining awake until your window begins?

Thanks, Scott J. They’re both good suggestions. I’ll give them a try. This last week, with new resolve after listening to the podcast, ive made good progress, getting to sleep quite well, regularly getting up at my set time. But when i woke at 4am last night, i got out of bed, and felt really awake, but also tired. I didn’t manage to read my sleep-readiness, and went back to bed and experienced poor quality time in bed. That’s a challenge: when to get back into bed; how to gauge sleepy tired when it isn’t quick coming.

Excellent news, Suellalan! Progress is progress and proof that you haven’t lost the ability to sleep!

If you’re not anxious or frustrated by the wakefulness, have you considered continuing to lie in bed as long as it’s pleasurable? If you’re determining your “back to bed” time by watching the clock, have you tried just gauging your sleepiness by head nodding and dozing as indicators to return to bed?
