Martin, in his wonderful YouTube videos, says that you cannot generate sleep and that we should not do things to try to sleep (such as extra exercise, etc) as it tends not to be effective and that sleep happens when you are not trying to sleep because your mind will not be monitoring for it.

One things I have struggled with is going back to bed. It feels like “trying” to sleep. I can have gotten out of bed, being sitting on my couch reading a book and nodding off, climb up to bed and then lay there wide awake staring at the ceiling. Lather, rinse, repeat.

Does this happen to anyone else? How do you deal with it?

Welcome to the forum, @iambyteman! Let’s see if we might be able to do some troubleshooting here!

How long have you been doing that yo-yo-ing as you described, and are you combining that technique with any kind of sleep window?

It sounds as though you are returning to bed during the night at the right time — when you are finding it hard to remain awake. When you go to bed and find yourself wide awake again (a common symptom of conditioned arousal), what is your cue to get back out of bed again?
