The less I sleep the more hyper aroused I feel. Anyone else? I am wired but can’t sleep through the night.

Yes! I feel your pain! I feel like my exhausted cells are buzzing right now! I was awake all night and only slept a few hours this morning. Adrenaline is dumping in my body.

Yep, sounds like me. I describe it as having my brain on fire! Plus terrible tinnitus which makes things worse. I’m trying sleep restriction and getting some sleep. Bedtime 1am to 6:30am. I’m thankful if I even get 2 or 3 hours. Some nights I don’t sleep at all. Pure misery.
Hang in there, it’s got to get better 🙏

It’s difficult, right? If only there was some kind of secret switch to turn off that hyperarousal — and yet, there’s not. If there was it might get switched off accidentally and you wouldn’t be able to respond to a real threat that required immediate action!

Fortunately, all is not lost because we can still control how we respond to that hyperarousal. If we respond by going to war with it, trying to fight it, it can become even more difficult. So, perhaps a different approach might be worth exploring — an approach that involves moving away from the struggle that makes it more difficult.

Instead of trying to fight or avoid it, perhaps it might be worth seeing if you can acknowledge it when it shows up and practice allowing it to come and go as it chooses. Perhaps being kind to yourself in return, too.

If your experience tells you that it cannot be controlled anyway, why go to the effort of trying to achieve the impossible?

Yes, I know exactly what you mean. Thanks to Martin’s 2 week course and YouTube videos, I finally managed to overcome my insomnia a year ago, sleeping on average about 6 hours a night. Now, it’s come back with a vengeance and I get so aroused with anxiety that I am only getting 0 to 4 hours sleep a night. I don’t wish insomnia on anyone, but it helps to know I am not alone.

It can be tough when difficult nights return! And, at the same time, it’s not unique or unusual — everyone has bad nights from time to time. What matters is how we respond!
