Anyone else have here have issues falling asleep due to hypnic jerk type muscle movements or twitches EVERY TIME you start to doze off? I have this problem in addition to just not being able to fall asleep or frequently waking up. It can go on for hours…sometimes I don’t sleep at all. I’ve seen doctors, tried various supplements, read pretty much everything there is to find on the internet about it…but nothing really seems to make a huge difference.

October 28, 2018 at 12:37 am #23830On a typical night, I’m usually tired enough to doze off again after it happens. But it keeps happening, over and over, as I try to doze off. It can happen for hours straight, so I usually just give up at some point and hope that I’ll be tired enough the following night to sleep through them. It can be anywhere from localized muscle twitches (pretty much anywhere on my body) to intense full body jerks. Very difficult to sleep through, so I don’t get much sleep these days.

Some types of medication can alleviate hypnic jerks (and some medications can exacerbate hypnic jerks) and frequent, disruptive hypnic jerks may be a symptom of another medical condition. Talking to your doctor is probably the best course of action at this stage. Good luck and keep in touch!

November 16, 2018 at 9:03 pm #24052Hello dear Hols – I have the same but mine is definitely a brain/psychological interference -its like I’m monitoring myself falling asleep and my defense-system interrupts. I don’t know how similar this is but the jerking awake is horrendous and I strongly empathise x and yes, not much out there about this type of insomnia – I’d do anything for the other -I can fall asleep usually no problem, it’s the quick and brutal interruption that create such lasting pain and fear of more……
November 21, 2018 at 12:46 am #24086You raise a great point, dreamtsleep — thanks for sharing. Many people with insomnia self-monitor as soon as they get into bed. In other words, because they are so keen/eager to sleep, they constantly (often subconsciously) keep checking to see if they are asleep when lying in bed. The result is that, when sleep finally comes, the brain realizes and suddenly wakes you up to say, “Hey! I fell asleep!”.
This can lead to a sharp awakening akin to a hypnic jerk. The key to resolving this is to recognize that we can’t control sleep, and that self-monitoring is not constructive.

November 22, 2018 at 4:32 am #24100I have had these hypnic jerks and almost drove me crazy (you can read my other post about vivid dreams). At their worse they prevented me from sleep for 2 weeks in a row. I also had the sensation of falling through the bed as soon as I dozed off, which woke me up in panic every time.
I am now almost completely over them. I might have one jerk like this every 2 months or so.
As I mention in my other post, what helped me was acceptance and not stressing over it. I know first hand how difficult acceptance is and that this advice might annoy you even more, because it annoyed me when I was in your situation. But it works.
Hope you get better soon.
