Hi I’m Mike and I’m an Insomniac, sounds like an intro to an AA meeting. Thought I’d introduce myself to fellow suffers. I’ve read through most of your introductory posts so I thought I’d follow suite and write a little about myself. Don’t fall asleep now 🙂
I’m 46 years old and have been married to Sue for 10 years, we have three children one boy/man of just turned 17 and two girls one of 14 and the youngest is about to turn 9, the elder two are my stepchildren but I consider them to be my own. We have lived in Devon, UK for the last three years, prior to that we lived in the Scottish Borders for 6 years, and I lived there for a total of 18 years.
I’ve never really suffered too much from sleep problems, although I always had problems when staying in hotels through work, I could never sleep very well which was a problem if I was staying away for a week. My real problems started 2 years ago when I suffered a breakdown and was diagnosed as having agitatetive depression with anxiety. Came as a huge shock as I’ve never suffered mental health problems before, I still have trouble understanding it to this day. From that day on I’ve suffered insomnia/sleep problems which to this day is only resolved through medication and wine (but not at the same time!!) The strongest medication I had taken in my life was paracetamol to now have to take anti-depressants and sleeping pills is not something I relish, my aim is to get off all my meds asap.
Are still awake?? Sorry I’m droning on a bit here, is that too much info?? Never know when to stop right change of tone, I won’t be quite so serious from now on, unless the situation calls for it. That’s it a short bio there’s lots more to tell but I’ll save that for another day, don’t want to give it to you all I one go or I’ll have nothing else to say
Ok I’m off, hope to see you all around the boards
Take care all
Mike

What was the reason for your move from the Borders to the West Country? That's quite a move! It's a beautiful part of the country, though – my Mum lives in Cornwall.
I'm sure you have lots more to share with us and I look forward to getting to know you better though your contributions to the community.

February 8, 2010 at 9:58 pm #10128Hi Martin
kind words indeed 🙂
Moved here to be closer to Sue's family we thought the kids needed to see more of their grandparents, Sue is from here originally so it just made more sense. I must admit to missing the Borders we lived miles out in the countryside and just had to step out of the front door and we were there. Although we live in a small village now its not quite the same still have to drive to get to the moors, the hills a smaller here too, its more bleak than breathtaking, still wouldn't go back to Scotland though.

Are you near the coast? I think the coastal scenery in the South West is nothing but breathtaking!

February 9, 2010 at 6:59 pm #10134Welcome Mike! I think what I have noticed the most (and liked the best) about this site, is how kind and supportive everyone is. Maybe it's that misery loves company thing, or more than likely it's that Martin was really good at choosing who became members. But whatever it is, I hope you will feel comfortable enough to continue to share with us. 🙂
Thanks for your Twitter name. I'm GHWatcher and I'm off to go follow you! 🙂
