Hello Ciara. Sorry to hear about the stress and worry you have been under of late. I am sure that has been really difficult, and no wonder your sleep has been suffering as a result.
Believe it or not, your experience is not actually uncommon. Most cases of ongoing sleep problems stem from an identifiable period of stress — and this is completely normal! Unfortunately, what can happen is that when our sleep becomes disrupted we begin to worry about our sleep and pay far more attention to our sleep than we ever did before. This immediately makes sleep more difficult.
Then, as our sleep continues to decline because of this worry and anxiety, we become even more worried and anxious about our sleep and before we know it we can feel trapped in a vicious cycle of ever-worse sleep and ever-more worry and anxiety.
The good news is that since your sleep issues only began a few weeks ago if you take action now you will find it much easier to fix your sleep compared to waiting for months or even years before taking action.
From what you’ve said, you sound as though you’d be a good candidate for CBT for insomnia since this will help address the anxiety and worry that is making sleep difficult. By addressing this anxiety and worry your sleep will improve and you will be armed with techniques that will last a lifetime should sleep problems return in the future.
