I am 87, have obstructive sleep apnea and chronic insomnia. I use a CPAP machine that pretty well handles the OSA. I am thinking that there is probably no way to get off the CPAP. However, I have been using Tamazepam (benzodiazepine) for more than 10 years and have been put on the 30 mg. dose. In addition, I take an over the counter sleep aid (AdvilPM). I still have trouble getting to sleep. I get to sleep at about 11 pm, but wake an hour later and get up to eat, go back to bed and go to sleep at about midnight. I awake at about 5:30 am. A pulmonologist gave me instructions on how to kick the Tamazepam/Advil medications, but no way to solve the insomnia problem. I have also asked for help from a regular physician who pretty much advised the same thing that the pulmonologist gave me with the same lack of what to do when off the drug. She did prescribe Trazedone, which I did not take until I talked to my primary Dr. – Primary Dr. said it wouldn’t work in place of Temazepam, but it wouldn’t hurt to take it along with Temazepam.
Most of my days are productive if I take a nap after lunch. I have no problem getting to sleep for these naps.
I am dependent on Temazepam and have no answers.
