I can fall asleep most nights with little or no problems. Yet two to three hours after I fall asleep, I’m wide awake. I also do not remember dreams during this sleep time. I am awake for about three or four hours until I doze off, usually I have dreams during these moments. I might get another hour or two of sleep during this moment. When I wake up, I still feel tired and have some difficulties concentrating. After four hours, I start to feel more tired, but I refrain from taking a nap. I used to have a hard night’s sleep to make up for the lack of sleep during the week, but I am not doing that any more. I limit my caffeine in the morning and usually stop about eight hours before I go to sleep. The most restful sleep I think I have is in the morning, when I dream, but I’m not getting enough of that sleep. The lack of sleep affects my health through an increase in my migraines. Since my insomnia has increased, so have my migraines. Medications have little to no affect on me and a few have given me horrific nightmares which has caused me to stop taking them. I am perimenopause and have been trying to regulate my progesterone, but am having difficulty with this process and I’m not sure if it’s affecting my sleep or if it’s another underlying issue. I feel helpless and unproductive while I’m awake at night and feel like I can’t shut off my brain.

You have to first stop trying to sleep. I know this sounds tough but when you are measuring your sleep continuously you will be feeding Anxiety. Anxiety then causes Insomnia. This is a eventually a loop where Anxiety feeds Insomnia and Insomnia feeds Anxiety.

You have to relax on the bed. Play the game that you closed your eyes and relaxed if possible try having long breaths. If possible make your exhale longer than inhale.

So play this game of relaxing yourselves and feel happy for relaxing.

This sounds silly but trust these simple things of deep breathing and relaxing more will help you to overcome the sleep issues.

Thanks for sharing that big insight, manohargss!

All I would add is that it’s impossible to control our thoughts, feelings, and emotions — when we try to do that we get tangled up in an endless struggle. What can be more helpful is making some space for difficult thoughts and feelings to exist, and then redirecting our attention onto things we have control over — the actions we can engage in that are important to us and that help us move toward the kind of life we want to live.
