This may or may not be seen as off topic but I have a few questions to put out there. I am an adoptive mum of a 4 yr old boy and 6 yr old girl. My daughter, due to her background, sleeps very lightly. We couldn't even do the tooth fairy for her properly as she would've disturbed if I moved her pillow to take the tooth. She, however, does get enough sleep. My son, on the whole, sleeps very well, but goes through patches of severe insomnia where he cannot get himself back to sleep. He is good and will read in bed or lie there but sometimes cries and cries because he cannot get to sleep. Does anyone have any ideas as to why he gets these periods or what I can do to help him through these times? It breaks my heart to hear him sob so and it makes him a very unhappy chappy the days after a sleepless night.

Hi, I also have an adopted daughter. She was often sick, She hardly

slept and though her health improved her sleep didn't.Thus one of the reasons why I developed problems sleeping.

I have tried a few things with her, when she woke up through the night i would often cuddle up to her and the security would send her back to sleep. I don't know your children's back grounds so this may not be the right thing to do.

In the last two years her sleep has improved she's not up as often through the night and we think its a direct result of what we read to her.We started reading children's bible stories to her and would pray with her.. ( I don't know your beliefs, but can only say this has been instrumental in building a wall of security for her, we cannot go to bed without a story and prayer now she insist on it.The nightmares have ceased or appear less often.

You could also try some herbal medicines for children but I would check with a naturopath or homeopath before giving this.

You can also try a child psychologist ( there maybe an underlying reason for the night crying??

I would suggest you speak to a doctor as he may point you in some direction..

I hope this helps I know how hard it is when they are like that, I used to feel helplessrolleyes.gif

Aww thanks hun – we also have bible stories and prayers so our beliefs are along the same lines 😉

Will try cuddling too, before we just tried to settle him with words in case the cuddles woke him more. Odd I know.

I'd not thought of herbal remedies. I was wary of the old hot milk thing because we're trying to get them both dry at night. I can speak to our local health shop and see what they suggest. Thank you hun x
