I developed insomnia overnight as a result of taking a chelator to rid my body of heavy metals and mold toxicity. It did it too fast and my body couldn’t handle it and I haven’t slept normally in 2 months. Now I think the chemical cause of the insomnia is gone but I’m so anxious around nighttime and I feel so much pressure to sleep that I sabotage myself. I have muscle twitches and jolts that wake me up as I’m drifting off and it’s just awful. CBD oil has helped but its not a guarantee to sleep. This is the first site to not have me freak out even more from lack of sleep. I’m grateful for the insight and tips and hope to turn this around soon.

Thanks for posting, Stephanie29.  It’s not uncommon when we experience a life event that temporarily interferes with our sleep, we can sometimes develop an anxious feeling about going to bed.  In these instances, our arousal system has become overactive and can interfere with our sleep system possibly resulting in a poor night’s sleep.  It may be helpful to know that when we try harder to sleep, the more difficult it is to sleep.

The good news is that we can override our arousal system by creating a greater sleep drive and implementing a “buffer zone” prior to bedtime. What time do you usually go to bed at night and are you getting out of bed at a consistent time each morning? What are some relaxing activities that you enjoy (reading, watching TV, drawing) that you could implement about an hour or so before you go to bed that might help with arousal?

Welcome to the forum, @Stephanie29! What you are experiencing is not unusual, so it can be addressed!

It’s not too surprising that you haven’t found CBD to be a guarantee for sleep, because CBD cannot generate sleep and because CBD doesn’t address the thoughts and behaviors that perpetuate sleep disruption!

As suggested by @scottctj, you will likely find it helpful to work on lowering arousal since that can be a big barrier to sleep.

You might also find it helpful to implement behaviors that build sleep drive because sleep drive can overpower the arousal system and make sleep easier.

One of the best ways to build sleep drive is to allot an appropriate amount of time for sleep — you can read more about this on the sleep restriction page here on this site.

          I hope this helps!
