This is my first post on here. I have suffered for many years and just cannot face staying awake for the whole night so this has escalated into alcohol abuse. I used to be able to manage it well but every time I wake up I just reach for the open bottle. I know its the wrong thing but am taking steps to help myself. I normally sleep well so these episodes are quite rare but have had two days off work this week becuase of it so its having a big impact on my life. Would be interested to hear of anyone else who has suffered like this. Doc has prescribed me a sleeping tablet for tonight to get me through until my routine returns. Thanks for reading

Hello Happy! Alcohol has a very interesting effect. It feels like it’s helping the person and then it makes him a prisoner. At first it goes off and after a while it causes insomnia. And the process just gets bigger. And increasing doses to get sleep and consequently more insomnia and more dependence. Hard to break this cycle. Many insomniacs use it to help initiate sleep. But over time this turns into nights of utter despair without being able to even nap. I don’t understand your difficulty whether it’s sleeping or staying awake, however, whatever it is, it’s best to stay away from that relief. If you continue, you’ll sell your soul for alcohol.

Hi Angeli – thanks for the reply. Yes I know alcohol is not the answer but at 2.00 in the morning all my logic disappears unfortunately. My problem is falling asleep. I tend to panic if Im not asleep within ten minutes. So the wine it is – Ive learnt my lesson this time though as I woke up on the floor so things have to change! Once Im asleep Im generally OK.
