I can get insomnia at any time, whether the cause is obvious (like noise or worries over something (even worries over sleep itself if sleep before the next day is particularly important)), or whether the cause is unknown and out of the blue (sort of like a “pseudo jet lag”). And I don’t concern myself overly if it’s just a night or two. But when nights with insomnia become more frequent, as is happening for me currently, I get really frustrated. When I look back over my life and recall other times that I’ve had a round of frequent insomnia over a significant period of time, I notice that it’s usually happened in the spring. I wonder if there’s some connection with spring allergies and a greater chance of prolonged insomnia.

There are probably as many triggers for insomnia as there are people in the world — we can’t eliminate all triggers for insomnia, just as we can’t eliminate all risks and dangers from living life as a human being.

If insomnia sticks around after the trigger has passed or is no longer relevant or obvious, that might be because of our response to the sleep disruption — the renewed effort we might be putting into trying to make sleep happen or trying to fight or avoid wakefulness or the difficult thoughts and feelings associated with it.

I hope there’s something useful here!
