Firstly, big thank you to Martin and this forum. It was of great help. My insomnia started as a side effect of a medication I used 5 months ago. My sleep improved by few hours lately and sleeping about 4-5 hours on average. However, I still have these bad headaches everyday. Do you think the headaches will go away after I reach to 7-8 hours of sleep? Any comments/guidance will be of great help.

      Many thanks,
      Anu

Hello Anu and welcome to the forum! I would suggest discussing concerns about headaches with your doctor. I don’t know of any evidence that chronic insomnia causes headaches (or that getting four to five hours of sleep leads to more headaches) but stress/anxiety is definitely associated with tension headaches. Office environments also seem to increase the problem of headaches associated with anxiety (possibly due to all the artificial light and perhaps being more sedentary).

Thank you Martin. I will do that. Headaches and burning eyes started with insomnia so I kind of associated with it. Also I am doing sleep restriction for the 2nd week and I am at sleeping about 4 – 5 hours. Sometimes fragmented. Do you think I can make it to 7 hours of quality sleep? How long it may take typically to achieve that following sleep restriction?

Well, we can’t control sleep duration — if the body wants to generate seven hours of sleep and conditions are right for it to generate seven hours of sleep, it will generate seven hours of sleep. There’s nothing we can do to make that happen, though, since the body takes care of sleep duration all by itself. All we can do is ensure we create good conditions for sleep and let the body take it from there!

We all make progress on our own timeline — all I can say is that if you implement techniques that build sleep drive, strengthen the body clock, and lower arousal, and make implementation your focus, the results will come by themselves!
