I finally realized I needed to get my insomnia under control after a couple life events took it from tough to debilitating. I’m new to the journey but have found these things that I’ve learned from Insomnia coach and other sources in using seem to help me out:

      1) Scrolling on my smart phone for no more than an hour at a time, with at least a half hour break in between sessions throughout any given day.
      2) Turning my phone to ‘sleep mode’ and no longer using it after 7:20 pm.
      3) Acknowledging that it’s normal to wake up between sleep cycles and reminding myself of this when that happens, helps me maintain calm when I wake in the night, and have an easier time falling back to sleep.
      4) Utilizing relaxing bedtime yoga before bed to help me ‘get sleepy’ if I don’t feel sleepy.
      5) Lavender hot tea in the evenings before bed and a heating pad on my back to help keep me relaxed once in bed.
      6) Using the bed for only sleep or intimacy.
      7) Getting out of bed within 10 mins of the alarm, each day. (Doing well at this one most days)
      8) Only changing my wake up time by 1-1.5 hours (later) on my days off.
      9) Learning about what sleep is, how it is driven and interrupted psychologically/physically.
      10) Making sure I go outside, even for 2 5 min increments daily if that’s all the time I have or all the weather permits, and exercising on most days.
I mostly write this post to remind me and keep me on track, but if it helps someone else, too, great!

Thanks for sharing! Sometimes it can be worth being mindful of the fact that sleep cannot be controlled — it’s all our attempts to control it that often lead to a lot of struggle!

Similarly, we can’t really control what our mind does and it might be all our attempts to fight or avoid difficult thoughts and feelings or to strive to experience only certain thoughts and feelings that can set us up for struggle!

What might truly have the most impact is working on doing things that matter and continuing to move toward a rich and meaningful life even after difficult nights and even in the presence of uncomfortable thoughts and feelings!

If we can do that, perhaps all the difficult stuff might have less of an influence over us!
