Hello last year was a tough year for me mentally and physically and with 2 job losses in the household it was rough. I’ve had trouble sleeping throughout the years but it only lasted a few days and I was back to normal. Last year working in a toxic work environment and having high levels of anxiety and medical issues I I could not turn my mind off at night and would pull all nighters. In Oct 2020 my doc prescribed Xanax and Ambien which worked a little. I stopped taking the Xanax and the Ambien has been working good for me overall. I take 2 (.5s) and wait until I feel sleepy then I go to bed and fall asleep quick. I have been taking Ambien nightly for a few months and would like to wean myself off. My biggest concern is “Am I going to fall asleep, stay asleep and how will I function the next day’ so I have made sleep anxiety a big deal. My goal is to stop taking the pills and to fall asleep. I quit my stressful job and found a better job and feel much better overall. On the nights I struggle to fall asleep I have a rough time functioning the next day. I am ready to learn and conquer my mind.

        Greetings!
Meds don’t make you sleep. It was your body that did all that all along. All meds do is sedate you and sedation isn’t sleeping. The thing is the story you tell yourself about your sleep tends to come true, ie, if you tell yourself you can’t sleep without meds then you can’t. Or if you do the opposite and believe you can sleep without meds then you can sleep. Actively seek evidence in the past or even in the future that you slept without meds and slowly build on that narrative that meds are a non factor in sleeping. Nothing ever was or will. What did was the regular bedtime schedule because human beings tend to be sleepy naturally after being awake 16-18 hours. Going forward, make this your anchor where if you know you’ve been awake sufficiently, then sleep is extremely likely to happen as long as you don’t get in the way with excessive worry or anxiety. Good luck and always be patient and kind to yourself.
