Hey all my first time here please please I would really appreciate it if someone can give me strong advice and some reassurance please. I’m 24 year old from England London. I had short insomnia in the past which was this year April had it for around 3 weeks it was scary and the worst ever. Started of just one night didn’t sleep for no reason tossing and turning and forced myself to sleep. Next day was thinking will I sleep tonight or not then I started googling and fell into the horrible rabbit hole of google saying insomnia will kill you, insomnia is caused by brain disease and chemical imbalance, and loads of other things. Then at night I get into bed try to sleep felt hot, faster heart beat, Hypnic jerks, tossing turning, butterflies, and kept going for a wee as anxiety. Then I found insomnia coach YouTube which was a god send then I watched most of the vids and thank god I felt calmer and better. Then went gp they told me not sleeping is due to stress and anxiety. Then they gave me kalms night to help me sleep at night used it for a few days slept for 8 hours each night. I stopped taking it then the same name didn’t sleep again became dependent but I didn’t take it then after 3 weeks my sleep was back to normal naturally and did not take any herbal med or anything at all. For all these moments slept everyday for 8 hours a night perfectly fine with no worries and stress and no kalms night. Few nights ago got into bed didn’t sleep all night tossing and turning and all the fears and worries came back even though everyone told me everyone gets sleepiness nights it’s normal but for me I started to worry and google again then all day I started to worry is this insomnia ? Will I sleep tonight ? Then next night came had broken sleep such as fall asleep then wake up then fall asleep then wake up happen so many times that night. Next day was so sensitive to sound and noise had faster heartbeat I had someone cough then I jumped it’s like my brain is super aware of everything. Kept going for a wee because anxiety was so high, tossing and turning couldn’t sleep then probably slept for 2 hours then woke up again after having a dream. So one night I sleep okay the next night broken sleep then next night can’t sleep. Why is it one day ok sleep ? Next day broken sleep ? Takes me so long to fall asleep it then makes me scared and worried. Please can someone help me please ?
September 27, 2024 at 1:40 pm #82281What you’re experiencing is difficult and it is a common part of the insomnia struggle that many people here will be able to identify with.
It can perhaps be summarized as: the more you try to make sleep happen, the more difficult it can become and the more you try to fight or avoid certain thoughts and feelings (such as anxiety) the more power and influence they can have and the more you can struggle with them.
With that in mind, what do you feel is a workable way to respond to all this? What guidance does your own experience have to offer?

September 27, 2024 at 1:48 pm #82286I would say maybe watch your YouTube vids again ? And not be afraid of the faster heart beat and feelings. It’s just 24/7 constant worry about sleep. I went go they told me there is no underlying disease that cause insomnia. They say it’s from fear and worry.
September 30, 2024 at 5:02 pm #82345Hi Sami1234, there used to be saying, “Don’t believe everything you read in the newspapers.” The updated version is: “Don’t believe everything you read on the Internet.” There is something quite attractive, even addictive, about clicking on a site, and then with the “help” of algorithms, you get steered to similar sites.
Fortunately, you have found a reliable site with Martin, so no need to click all over the place.
As you are learning, sleep anxiety is the main driver. If you haven’t been sleeping well lately, it’s understandable that you are anxious about whether you will sleep well tonight. And you can acknowledge it: I’m having the thought that I am anxious about how I’m going to sleep—without sliding into “Oh my God, if I don’t sleep well, what am I going to do? I can’t handle this!”
I am actually going through a bit of a setback myself, so this is not just a theory for me. It is happening right now. And I hope I sleep okay, but I also know I have been here before.
We can’t make ourselves sleep great, but we do have a say in our attitude about it.
Take care, you are not alone, not even close.
September 30, 2024 at 11:56 pm #82349Hey thanks for your reply back. It’s just so scary sometimes going through it again. Like I fell asleep but then woke up to go wee then after I struggled to fall back asleep is this normal. Thanks
October 11, 2024 at 1:33 pm #82596Waking during the night is a normal part of sleep — struggling to fall back to sleep can often come from all our attempts to fall back to sleep. In other words, the more we try, the more we can find ourselves struggling.
