I have been struggling with insomnia my whole life. I also love sleep. I always have great, vivid, lucid dreams. I don’t have any issues staying asleep typically, but the act of falling asleep is almost impossible until my brain is ready. I’ve work 12hr shifts, body completely drained, get home and lay in bed for hours before falling asleep. I’ve tried about every over the counter medicine, quite a few prescription medicines, switched diets, routines, nothing works. I am currently taking lunesta(which I took 4hrs ago and haven’t even so much as yawned). I also somewhat have a fear of dying in my sleep/not waking up. I know it sounds bizarre, but as I grow older, the harder it is to wake me once I have fallen asleep. I sleep through the loudest of alarms, and it typically takes someone shaking me, or just naturally waking up on my own to get up. I never know what time I am going to fall asleep/wake up, and it makes it impossible to hold down a job, let alone lead a normal life. Please help.

        Welcome to the forum.

It’s important to bear in mind that fatigue (feeling drained) is not the same as sleepiness — so it can be easy to go to bed before we are actually ready for sleep. Taking time to unwind before going to bed can help you relax, calm your mind, and recognize sleepiness cues.

You mentioned that you work 12-hour shifts. Do these shifts always start and end at the same time or do they regularly change?
