I’ve been through cycles of insomnia for about 2 years now. Before that, I was an excellent sleeper without pills.

What messes with my head the most is when I do all the work to learn how to relax, let go, etc, and I get a few months where I think the problem has passed. And then out of nowhere, insomnia returns full blown, and it shakes all the confidence I had built. I feel like it gets harder to get my confidence back every time.

I don’t freak out the first few nights of difficult sleep. I think I do well when it comes to allowing some nights to be rough. It’s when it’s day 5 or 6 and I’m still not sleeping that I start getting scared that insomnia has taken over.

Rationally I know that insomnia can’t just take me over. But the feeling that I never will just sleep consistently again is so hard to shake when i’m feeling the mental and emotional shakiness that comes from sleep deprivation.

Add to that that I’m in my late 30’s, and I have heard so much about how difficult hormones make it to sleep through Perimenopause. It’s like an added boogeyman – is it my hormones? Does that mean the beginning of 15-20 years of hormone induced insomnia?

I’m partially venting. But mostly what I’d like is to have other people set my head straight and help me see reason through the fear.

        Nothing unique or unusual here!

If you think back to five years ago, is there a difference in your approach to sleep today? If so, what are the differences — and are there any insights there?

As you implied, difficult nights from time are natural and normal. Just as experiencing human thoughts and feelings is natural and normal.

What can make things more difficult is trying to control sleep and trying to control our thoughts and feelings. When we end up down that rabbit hole, we can end up getting tangled up in a struggle since none of that stuff can be directly or permanently controlled.

        Is there anything useful here?
