I do spinning classes at the gym (exercises on an exercise bike) but lately i booked one and spent the previouse night awake as I couldn't switch off, so didn't get to go to my class because of exhaustion. Have booked another, if I don't sleep again I will still go. Anyone else had this problem?
May 23, 2011 at 7:58 pm #12531This hasn't affected me directly, but in my research for the Insomnia Land blog I've come across lots of different advice regarding insomnia and exercise. Generally, exercise is seen as a good thing and helps a lot of people sleep. That being said, it seems that exercise too late in the day can actually make it more difficult to fall asleep.
What time of day do you have your spinning classes? Maybe booking an earlier class would help?

May 24, 2011 at 5:16 pm #12532I do the classes in the morning as they usually fully booked. I usually find it hard to sleep the night before getting up.
May 24, 2011 at 6:36 pm #12533That's odd. Is it just spinning that affects your sleep? Have you tried different classes?

I tend to have the opposite problem, someone once suggested to me that I exercise before bed, but, that'd only make me MORE awake. Which makes sense, considering exercising stimulates you. At 3/4 AM I tend to take my dog for a walk through the local woods, hoping that by time I get back at around 6 AM I'll just go to sleep, but most of the time once I get back, I just fancy a cup of tea and I'm wide again after the exercise.
I would say, though, that even if you haven't slept, still go. Not only will the exercise perk you up during the day, but also once your muscles have relaxed and the adrenaline/serotonin released wear off it may actually help you to sleep the night after.
May 29, 2011 at 6:21 am #12537Yes, I have often had the problem of insomnia affecting my workouts. I like to jog and try to do yoga on a regular basis. When I am having sleeping problems it is very difficult to get myself motivated to go. At times I have forced myself to go even though I was completely fatigued, and ALWAYS felt better that i did. However many times I have just sat on the couch instead feeling like a zombie, and I can say that the days I worked out were definitely better. I find that when I exercise I am generally in a better mood and have less stres and anxiety, which is directly related to my sleeping probs in the first place. Hang in there and try to make youself go even if you are tired! You will feel better that you went (even if you are still tired)!
June 11, 2011 at 6:24 am #12538I am the founder and president of Exercise Haters of the World. Once in awhile I'll do thirty minutes on the treadmill at 2.5 mph, any faster and I can't focus to read. If I were as committed to working out as my wife and daughter are, I probably would need no sleep medication. But it's much easier to take a pill than it is to exercise. That's probably the reason I'm a good twenty pounds over weight. I used to be 52 pounds over, but I lost 32 of them. I can live with 20 over.
My wife is the founder and president of Exercise Lovers of the World. She's invested a gob of money in professional-grade exercise equipment to use here at home. After our daughter married and moved out, we converted her bedroom to a workout room. Donna is in there every night after work. She works out on a different piece each night with the treadmill being her favorite. She rarely has trouble sleeping; I'm so jealous.
