It’s been 9 month’s dealing with this issue since I retired. Have used supplements, medical marijuana products, meditation, and different type of prescribed sleeping pills. I cannot continue taking rx meds forever. Thank God I found Martin podcast and have listened most of them. I need help. I started what I learned from the podcast not to go to bed until I feel really sleepy, I do feel sleepy and go to bed but once I lay down I am wide awake.

How did you make sleep happen before you retired? What’s different in your approach now, compared to back then? Any insights there?

Before retirement I was on Amitriptyline 50mg., initially used to for pain on low dose and increased dose for sleep. I was able to fall asleep but at times falling back to sleep when I wake up at 3 am. was difficult. Right before retirement I discontinued taking amitriptyline, I figured my life would be less stressful eliminating my job as a nurse. However, 2 months after retirement and off amitriptyline sleepless nights started and has worsen to the point I was awake all night. So, I tried everything I mentioned earlier, only one rx meds help if I do not take it I am awake all night but I cannot continue taking it. I don’t want to go back taking Amitriptyline. I was on it for 16 yrs.

From what you’re saying, it sounds as though medication might not be proving to be a long-term solution. Would that be accurate, from your own experience?

Many people have found sleep disruption and issues with sleep got worse (or even started for the first time) upon retirement and I suspect that might be because there’s often less structure to our days and less opportunity to expand our focus so we are more aware and engaged in things other than sleep. What are your thoughts on that?
