When I was in my mid 20’s, a few years after severe mono and then some viral infections… I went to bed (after feeling just fine for a few years) and simply didn’t fall asleep. This happened again and again until 11 nights racked up. I didn’t have a doctors, was convinced it would “give” and was literally begging my fiancé to hit me w a 2×4. Finally, we went to a doc, who gave me medication. Then a sleep dog, whose overnight study was inconclusive….. no sleep detected.
I was soon bedridden w cfids (brutal illness, stupid name) but recovered pretty well. I was on ambien 30 mg for years. Became addicted and sought out more. Got sober 15 years ago. About 10 years ago, a cfids specialist gave my Xyrem (I shouldn’t have taken it) telling me it used to be available on health food stores, etc. I took that for 10 years.
I’m 10 months off it and have tried every sleep drug, on and off label. Nothing but a larger dose of ambien works. Nothing. And no one has answers. I used to manage w trazadone, or if I had something stressful 10 mg of ambien here and there. Now, it’s like my tolerance is through the roof and there doesn’t seem to be any precedence and I’m scared as 3 sleep docs have thrown up their hands.

Martin, the initial cause if the insomnia was neurological… yes, did a course of cbt, it is ***not*** behavioral or circadian.
