I am a 48 year old who lives in Hull in the United Kingdom and I have had disturbed sleep since 7 July 2012. This started because I had a problem with my ovary, which was painful enough to stop me getting to sleep, unless I was totally exhausted and looks like it is going to go on for a good 12 – 18 months.
I had to really fight to get a diagnosis and was rejected by Gynae 3 times along the way . . . Enough to stop a girl sleeping ! I finally got a very glamorous diagnosis of Ovarian Enreapment Syndrome – definitely Gynae then !
I started on what was originally diagnostic medication ( Prostap ) late October 2012 and unfortunately one of the many side effects of this medication is insomnia – just what I needed after disturbed sleep since July. The positive to come out of this was that I got my diagnosis but the down side is I have to be on Prostap for 12 – 18 months. Looking at the positive again . . . My ovarian pain has significantly improved and on balance I am better off on the medication . . . Insomnia and all !
I am fed up of being asleep because I am exhausted when my lovely partner is awake and awake when he is asleep but I have coped with it as best I can. We have had a very nice Bree Van De Camp home made Christmas as I have found my creative side and bought a sewing machine . . . If anything stands still long enough in our house it gets baked, a scarf knitted for it, or a cover sewn up to match its characteristics ! I am now known as the Wood Gnome and my very busy workshop is known as Wood Gnome Central.
All that said I am now fed up with not sleeping in the right part of the day and have got to the point ( like right now ) where my eyes are too awake to get to sleep but not awake enough to stay open and read AAAAARRRGGGGHHHH !
I am hoping to have supportive online chats with other insomniacs to give each other advice and support in the very testing wee hours.

I'm new here too.
Yes, I also hate that the only thing that will send me off to sleep is pure exhaustion.
Unlike you, I have had insomnia for most of my life.
I hope you will be able to catch it relatively quickly and return to normal!
Look forward to talking to you in the forum.

Thank you for your message and your good wishes that I manage to resolve my problem quickly.
I am so sorry to hear that you have had insomnia nearly all your life, 6 months has been enough for me.
I have just woken up and thanks to Martins emails had a different view on I. I am not angry I have woken up / I didn't look at the clock and panic and I am not putting myself under any pressure to get back to sleep. I have come on to the forum to see what's new and am then going to do my Solfeggio 639 Hz meditation for 40 minutes and if I can't get back to sleep I will get up until I am tired enough to get back to sleep – great advice Martin. Don't want to teach you to suck eggs but have you tried meditation apps ? I don't always manage to get to sleep after them but they do make me feel soft and relaxed and this is much better than frustrated and angry that I can't get back to sleep.
I went back to work yesterday after being on enforced sick leave for 2 months so didn't have my usual afternoon snooze and I was really surprised that I didn't bob off until 7 pm, which is very unusual – I had a good 1 1/2 hours sleep on the sofa and then 4 hours in bed so that isn't bad after what could have been a stressful day. What I am trying to say ( never been good with short versions ! ) is I am learning to accept sleep anytime I can get it and not get upset if it is not the norm – never did want to be like everyone else anyway !
Hope you are managing a little sleep tonight.

January 3, 2013 at 5:07 pm #14311Welcome aboard, Ted!
A common frustration of insomnia is watching your spouse sleep soundly on command whilst us insomniacs lie awake and wonder how on earth they do it. Jealousy and anger is perfectly normal!
You seem to have a positive outlook, which will no doubt help you improve the quality of your sleep – indeed, many other members find insomnia has unleashed their creative sides so perhaps sleep deprivation isn't all bad after all!
I cover meditation and sound therapy in the sleep training – so keep following those emails.
Take care of yourself and I look forward to reading more of your posts 🙂

January 3, 2013 at 6:16 pm #14312Thanks Martin and THANK YOU SO MUCH for setting this website up and for your emails, which are really making a difference.
I don't expect to be insomnia free at the end of the 2 weeks but I am already looking at lack of sleep and how it makes me feel differently and that is great progress.
