            Hey Barrie

Remember that waking during the night is completely normal – it's how we react to that nighttime awakening that makes all the difference. Healthy sleepers will often be so unfazed about waking up that they don't even remember it happening. Others will immediately worry about the fact they've woken. This worry leads to excessive stress and stimulation that then makes falling back to sleep more difficult.

So, when you wake during the night just relax and remind yourself that waking is completely normal.

I just signed up, since nothing seems to work for me consistently. I love the idea that optimal sleep is only 7 hrs. I wonder how variable that is for individuals. How long does sleep deprivation last? I've been sleep deprived for so long, it would be nice not to feel tired all the time and be able to exercise properly. I appreciate all the info from Martin. He looks pretty good for an insomniac!

Welcome, Karen. I try to avoid telling people how much sleep they should be getting, since we're all different – and sleep quality often counts for more than sleep quality. That being said, all we *really need* is about 5.5 hours of 'core sleep' each night.
