Do you think insomniacs are typically introverts or extroverts? Martin, have there ever been any studies done on this? Including myself, all the other insomniacs that I have known personally have been introverts. Would love to hear others' opinions! 😐
December 19, 2011 at 12:18 am #13380Just on my part, very much an introvert.
December 21, 2011 at 7:20 pm #13381I haven't come across any studies about introverts/extroverts but it's an interesting idea. Hopefully some other members will chime in and we can reach our own conclusions!

I'm an Introvert (according to Myers-Briggs) and I have terrible sleep issues.
December 25, 2011 at 12:40 am #13383A man that I work with has Sleep Apnea and uses a mask. He says that it worked much better when he started using it than it does now. Odd how this problem is the same for sleeping pills. They work sometimes in the beginning and then stop working after a while.
January 15, 2012 at 2:55 am #13384I'm definitely an introvert and have sleep problems. Thinking of other people I know who have sleep problems, I don't see a pattern. Some are extroverts, others introverts.
February 7, 2012 at 12:49 pm #13385Sorry, folks. I am primarily an extrovert, in that I bask in the energy of a social group (as long as I'm part of that group, or at least not excluded).
That said, I have had periods of overwhelm, but most of those have been when I know too few folk there and haven't the energy to force the issue, or when I'm clearly the outsider: everyone but me is talking about something in which I'm not involved, which I've always been taught is extremely rude. I like people-watching, and I talk to random strangers.
I can't remember if I met a guy named Random once, but I do know I've met a man whose parents named him for one of the Nine Princes of Amber (Roger Zelazny novel/series). There's a young man at our local cinema whose name is Bram, likely after Mr. Stocker, rather than after Bram(well) Bronte.
I have noticed that I seem to be less extrovert since we moved over to the Valley of Heart's Delight. While my social circle and life declined, my husband's increased, and by and large, I am left out of that. Until my son was old enough, if every other adult was going to be gone, I had to stay with him–husband never seemed to think I might want to make plans for myself, and needed to know if he'd be home or not. Some of that has to do with legalities and minors (he's 18, since the 28th!), and some had to do with being involved with County Mental Health, and their rather narrow ideas of what “healthy” social activities for parents of kids in their programs were. I don't know what “community standards” they were looking at, but it wasn't one I was living in.
February 7, 2012 at 3:19 pm #13386I am an introvert.
February 7, 2012 at 5:59 pm #13387I'm an introvert. It would be interesting to find out if there is a statistical connection between introversion and insomnia. One thing that would be interesting to find out is if there are more lifelong (since childhood) insomniacs amongst introverts. I know anyone can become an insomniac from stress or medication or whatever, but it seems like more introverts have had insomniac tendencies from childhood on. I know introverts tend to be very sensitive.
February 7, 2012 at 9:51 pm #13388I think we introverts tend to “internalize” things a bit more. There's lots of stuff constantly running around in our heads — and keeping us awake!!
February 9, 2012 at 5:42 am #13389My sleeping issues stem from anxiety and this effects my personality as well. If I am having a bad bout of OCD and anxiety I tend to shut myself off from the world- too many triggers- I worry I will have panic attacks( not fun!) but , generally, I love people; love to talk with people and hear their stories and really love to talk about myself 😛 So , am I both?

Sometimes it can be difficult to determine whether you are an introvert or an extrovert. Most introverts like people. The main difference is that they tend to need some time alone to recharge their batteries, whereas extroverts need to be among people to recharge. It's all about where you get your energy from, internally, or externally.
I love people. In fact, I would love to be a teacher or a counselor. But I do recognize that I have to have down time in order to recharge and feel good. Too much socializing, especially in a crowd, will wear me out and overstimulate me.

That's interesting! I didn't realize it was about energy and such. I didn't mean to imply that introverts didn't like people 😮 Just maybe preferred being alone.

I looked up the Myer's Brigg's test and took it and it said I am:
moderately expressed introvert
slightly expressed intuitive personality
distinctively expressed feeling personality
moderately expressed judging personality
😮
🙂

Oh wow! Me too, I'm INFJ. That's weird because INFJ is supposed to be the most rare type. Those online tests are very often wrong, but I did a lot of personal research so I could understand the cognitive functions. I've tested both INFJ and INFP, but I know it's INFJ. I think a lot of us are quite sensitive, so it would make sense to find another INFJ on here.
