I have had sleep problems for the past thirty years, mostly tied to an overactive mind. Nightly benedryl solved the problem for me but after about ten years of use I read it could be a strong risk factor for Alzheimers. At the same time I read lack of sleep is a risk for Alzheimers so I’m damned either way:( For the past eight benedryl-free years I have gotten roughly 4 hours of sleep a night. I have no trouble falling asleep but wake every two hours and usually can’t fall back asleep after the second awakening (2:30am). I would be overjoyed to get six solid hours of sleep a night.

There is no evidence that chronic insomnia causes Alzheimer’s — so hopefully that’s one less thing for you to worry about! In addition, the active ingredient in Benadryl (the antihistamine diphenhydramine) is ignored by the body after about three days of consecutive use. So, this means that all the sleep you got over the 10 years of taking that drug was generated by your body’s own natural ability to sleep!

I’m happy to read about diphenhydramine not causing long-term side effects. I use it 1-2x a week dispersed/intermittently as well as melatonin. Diphenhydramine seems to allow me to not wake up during the lighter sleep cycle. I keep hearing about how poor sleep affects longevity and that concerns me – we’ll see, I guess.
