I’ve been having great success with my insomnia lately. I don’t let the thoughts bother me, and I’m enjoying life better than I was when I was consumed with how to fix this.

That being said. Is it possible that I have PTSD because of what originally started my insomnia? My body still gets really tense and uncomfortable before bed. I’m not fighting any thoughts, it feels like I’m fighting my own body. I’ve been doing what I can to relax, but I still feel the the effects my body has to bed. I know that having little sleep doesn’t cause me as much trouble as I think. It’s almost like I’m more worried about falling asleep because it feels physically like my body still hasn’t processed the original trauma of my insomnia. I do the things that align with my values. But just can’t seem to relax my body at bed time. Any help?

      Thanks

It sounds as though you’re making real progress — and, at the same time, perhaps there is still some totally understandable resistance to experiencing difficult thoughts and feelings.

So, perhaps it might be useful to continue practicing ways of acknowledging when your body feels tense and uncomfortable. Observing those feelings and allowing them to come and go as they please (even though you wish they weren’t present at all!) instead of trying to fight or avoid them.

Similarly, it might be useful to practice acknowledging and observing the appearance of worry — something you will always experience for as long as you are a human being! Worry doesn’t prevent sleep from happening, but trying to fight or avoid it sure can!

Thank you for your help! I’ve been noticing that the more present I am in the moment, the less the thoughts and feelings bother me. When I’m experiencing those feelings or thoughts, I acknowledge them and move on, or stay present with what is going on. It’s gets harder as the evening goes on, but I also am getting better at continuing to be present. I’m allowing myself to love myself. I’m a Christian, and a friend posted that if we are to love our neighbors as ourselves, shouldn’t we love ourselves like how we love our neighbors? I’m way more gracious to those around me, than I am to myself. So I’m giving myself space to be ok with everything not being perfect or ideal. I’m seeing my inner child and patting him on the back saying it’s ok bud, you got this. And Martin, your videos have been the biggest help and encouragement to me! I can’t thank you enough!

Thanks for sharing (and for your kind words)! It sure sounds like you are on a more workable path — as you mentioned, it’s not easy to repeatedly bring our wandering mind back to the present (especially as the evening goes on) and that’s why ongoing practice can be so helpful!
