My insommnia started 5 months ago. A routine ECG picked up a problem which meant that I had to stop my amitriptyline asap. I had been taking the amitriptyline for 15 years to help with my fibromyalgia nerve pain . This medication is also used as an antidepressant and has sedating qualities. Long story short, I was having trouble sleeping within a week, a problem that became increasingly worse over the following months. I followed all if the sleep hygiene tips, bought every OTC sleep aid, tried hypnotherapy and even took ice to bed with me to try and calm my vegus nerve. I have cancelled many social engagements, not seen close family, cried on most days and had many suicidal thoughts. I strongly believe that insommnia can be one of the worst things and yet many people ( who sleep well) have no sympathy and no understanding of how delibitating a condition it is. As with everything else that I have tried, I have come to insommnia coach in desperation and with hope.

Hello Kazza and welcome to the forum.

Your response to that sleep disruption is as understandable as it is a textbook example of how our behaviors can perpetuate sleep disruption. This is good news since it means that some behavioral changes might help turn the tables on your insomnia and create significantly better conditions for sleep.

Have you tried implementing any cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia (CBT-I) techniques yet?
