Hi. I have experienced insomnia for a very long time (25 years) and (occasionally) feel this is just a chronic problem that will eventually wear me down. I have read guide books on insomnia and follow their advice and I am a meditator – I sit and follow breathing for 30 mins before I go to bed after doing gentle stretching exercises. The main issue seems to be alertness and sensitivity. I don’t ruminate on problems but if there is anything that gets my energy up – doing some work, going away visiting or discussing with my partner before bed then I don’t sleep. Sometimes hardly at all. I don’t let this affect my daily plans and can keep going with very little sleep for days – but feel dreadful at times. Paracetamol and codeine sometimes helps. Can at times feel desperate. Would welcome any advice.

It sounds as though you might be a bit tangled up in a struggle with trying to control your thoughts and feelings — and that’s understandable since difficult thoughts and feelings don’t feel good!

And yet, as you know from experience, you cannot permanently delete difficult thoughts and feelings — they always end up coming back, right?

So, perhaps it’s all the effort to try to control what cannot be controlled (sleep, thoughts, feelings) that creates a struggle? A struggle that makes things more difficult as all the difficult stuff pushes back harder, you consume your energy in the battle, and you can end up getting distracted from the things you want to do and the world around you.
