Hi! I’m new and not one to post but figured I’d go “all in.” One thing I really struggle with during insomnia bouts is this idea that if I think about it or talk about it too much it makes it real or will make it worse. Or if I have two bad sleep nights in a row that means sleep is going to be bad for a long time. Or if I get upset about it in the middle of the night and feel overwhelmed and sad that I’m losing the battle and insomnia will get worse. As I write it out I can clearly see this for what it is- magical thinking, illogical. Just putting it out there

Thanks for going “all in” — and welcome to the forum 🙂

You have the idea that thinking or talking about insomnia will make it real or worse — and your experience tells you that insomnia shows up and does what it wants whether or not you think about it or talk about it.

        What’s the opportunity here? 🤔

Hi MCD89, so much for speculating about the future, right? Martin can clarify if need be, but I think it comes down to maybe you sleep well tonight and maybe you don’t. Sorry if that sounds callous, it’s not meant to be. My point is we can’t control whether we sleep well, beyond some routine steps to improve our chances, e.g. avoiding the double espresso at bedtime.

Thoughts definitely can drive insomnia, but we can’t control those either. If I try to shut out the thought that “omg, I haven’t slept well all week, this is it, I’m condemned to a life of exhaustion, I wish I were dead, etc.” I find the thought just gets stronger. I will add that it helps when I just watch the thought scurry through my mind without buying into it. Just because a thought is powerful doesn’t make it true.

I am guessing you agree this makes logical sense. I guess further that if we were always logical, we wouldn’t ever have trouble sleeping? Anyway, it seems we’re not all that logical much of the time.

Take care, you are not alone.

I found that going to Martin Reeds videos and watching them really helped me a lot. Especially when he talks about being positive. Thinking about the nights that I did sleep good and knowing sleep drive always wins. I know I sleep so much better now but occasionally will have a bad night. This sucks but it is ok, I dont have to let sleep control me and make me have a bad day. Then when I go on with my life my sleep drive will let me sleep again, it always does.

I know I went back and listed to the daylight savings time video because I was thinking this will mess me up but No, he explains it is just an hour, it will work itself out. I think a positive mindset really helps. It is weird how the mind works.
