I had insomnia for like 10+ years, I was practically born with anxiety about bedtime (my nanny used to think I was possessed…..) but anyways, I’m here to reassure you you’re not alone and that this therapy is AWESOME!! it’s extremely difficult but it really really works, nothing has ever worked for me, no therapy nor drug, until sleep restriction. That being said I cheated a little by week two because, I was getting discouraged. It’s really really hard, but the more you stick with it the more effective it will be.
Let me give you more specifics about my case and maybe you’ll find comfort in relating to me. I was pulling one or two all-nighters a week simply because my brain would never shut off at night, occasionally I would get 8 hours, but on average I was getting 4 hours per night! Then, with sleep restriction, I was allowed to lay in bed for 5 hours, which seemed unfair because WHAT IF I was going to be able to sleep my 8 hours, then why would anyone suggest that I get out of bed at 6 am, shouldnt they suggest I sleep in??? Well, NO….. And it was that kind of thinking that screwed me over for so many years. In fact, after implementing sleep restriction, I was actually averaging more sleep over the course of the week. Trust Martin when he says that you maaay lose a little sleep now in order to gain better sleep in the long run. It really works.
Since I have never been a great sleeper, I spent many years researching this topic and talking people’s ears off about insomnia, so if you need someone to vent to or to bounce questions off of, I’m happy to talk! Martin has heard all my doubts and has been really great and patient too!
