      Hi all,

I was wondering what medications people here tend to find the most helpful regarding insomnia. I have been on so many, I've almost lost count. And the one that seemed tried and true for me– temazepam, AKA brand name Restoril– recently has become less effective. Although it is recommended only for “short-term use for treatment of insomnia,” I have been on it for several years because it was the only thing that worked and both I and my doctor, I believe, were becoming desperate.

In the past, I have used Ambien (became ineffective after approximately a week), Lunesta (side effects outweighed benefits), lorazepam (discontinued due to overdose), and a brief stint on Seroquel as an off-label use. That last was awful, I was a total zombie, among other side effects.

I was wondering if anyone out there is using medication after a long period of searching for the “right” one. If anyone would be willing to share their experiences with the aforementioned drugs, others I haven't listed (like I said, pretty much lost track of ALL of them), ones that work for them, etc., I would really appreciate it. Thanks!

Most sleeping drugs here don't come particularly well recommended. It tends to be a scenario of the lesser of two evils – either you live with the effects of sleep deprivation or pop the pills and get some semblance of sleep in return for a drug hangover and grogginess the next day.

If you take a search through this section of the forum, you'll see quite a few medications mentioned but I'll post this discussion in the next insomniac bulletin and hopefully some more members will chime in with their experience of specific medications.

It'll certainly be helpful to draw the various discussions into one central 'resource'.
