I had to take blood pressure medications and after the fact found that Beta Blockers have been linked to insomnia in some people by interfering with melatonin production. I reduced the amount I am taking to 50 milligrams but still have an insomnia problem. I suspect the causes of my insomnia are complex; going for a sleep study Saturday. There is some evidence that another type of blood pressure drug, Calcium Channel Blockers, may also cause insomnia in some people although the evidence is not as strong as with beta blockers (key in side effects of your blood pressure medication on the web and/or go to AskaPatient.com). I am interested in hearing from people as to what medications they believe may cause or aggravate insomnia; doesn't just have to be blood pressure medications. I think it will be helpful to see what people have come up with. By the way talk to your doctor before reducing or eliminating any medication that may be causing insomnia; it is difficult to know for sure if the medication is the problem or something else. Suddenly stopping or reducing a medication can be dangerous. I am new to this website but I have read a lot on it and now realize there are a lot of people really “hurting” out there from insomnia; we need to do what we can to help each other.

Thanks for the great discussion topic – I am firmly of the opinion that a number of popular drugs we take are behind many sleep difficulties.

Of course, this doesn't apply to everyone; but I think that sleep disruption as a side-effect of certain drugs needs to be publicized far more than it is right now.

I am actually in the process of putting something together on this for the Insomnia Land blog, so stay tuned. In the meantime, hopefully some other members will chime in with their thoughts.

I also take several blood pressure medicines and I was wondering if the same thing was happening to me.

try to take your blood medications separately and don,t mix them with your vitamins or other supplements at t.he same time

I was eventually able to get off the beta blocker blood pressure medicine without my blood pressure soaring although I still take other blood pressure medications. I think the beta blocker is the one most linked to insomnia. My sleep is better now but still not normal (did 4 and 1/2 hours last night). I have never heard that taking blood pressure medications and vitamins together can cause insomnia. I don't take them all in one gulp, but I take my blood pressure pills and a multivitamin at breakfast one right after another.

try to take them 30 minutes apart.
