For the last decade since menopause, I haven’t slept in more then? 3-4 hours at a time, and then may get another hour or two after working hard for it. Someone just told me that they instantly slept better more than 4 hours when they went on hormones oestrogen and progesterone. Has anyone had any success this way?

I can’t offer any suggestions on the hormones, but what I can say is that if you have been struggling with sleep for a decade, it’s likely that your approach to sleep has changed during that time, and that change might be the main reason why sleep seems to be such a struggle now.

Of course, hormonal changes can definitely disrupt sleep — but that doesn’t mean that everyone is doomed to struggle with insomnia around menopause! What can happen is that we experience some sleep disruption, get (understandably) concerned, try to fix it — and then we get tangled up in an endless, exhausting struggle that can make things more difficult.

Is your approach to sleep different today than it was 20 years ago? Are there any insights there?

Definitely have messed myself up struggling with insomnia and have been thrilled to learn about, and start trying your novel approach. I already am feeling happier just by trying to reduce the pressure on myself to sleep!
But I still am curious if HRT is a magic button for any other women here, as a friend has found, and if sleep is among one of its benefits, as estrogen levels plunge.
