I have been signed off work for 8 weeks with severe sciatica. I tried to go back to work for a few hours a day at week 5 even though my symptoms had not improved, but this was treated as a phased return where I was then expected to be back fully within a set time or be reduced to part time. This I think triggered off insomnia where I was only sleeping 1 or 2 hours at night and not until 4 in the morning. Sleeping pills prescribed to reset my sleep cycle have only given me abdominal pains which made things worse. I have nerve pain in my face coming from my neck and shoulder and arm pain from lying on my arm too much in bed. I try to hide my watch/clock during the night as advised by Martin Reed. He gave good advice that it is more important to try to relax than to force yourself to sleep when lying down at night. Some nights after I have not slept at all the previous night I am wide awake still at bed time. Getting comfortable in bed is a big challenge for me before I can even begin to do all of the other techniques such as visualisation, breathing exercises etc
