Is there any certain music that helps any of you sleep?

Right where it belongs by Nine Inch nails helps relax me and sometimes puts me into a sleep.

If this does work for you please tell, if you haven't tried it maybe you should, if you can have your music to play for so long and then turn off.

I use songs as background noise to get to sleep but the really odd thing is the heavier the music the better…how odd!

I haven't found that music helps, but spoken word does. Go figure!

It could well be the same logic, it is a back ground noise…and “aural security blanket” if you will.

I think often music creates more of an emotional response in my brain than spoken word does, particularly if it's something with memories attached. I think it actually stops me from sleeping. I guess the spoken word makes it feel as though I'm not on my own, so yes 'security blanket' theory works.

I remember reading about how to pick the right type of music to listen to when trying to fall asleep. I think you've all just proved there is no such thing as one 'right' type that works for everyone.

However, I have read that you should choose something you are already very familiar with. Otherwise, your brain will remain active as it listens to the words and sounds. When you listen to music you're already familiar with, it helps your brain relax (and hopefully helps you sleep).

When you're listening to podcasts, are they new episodes, or ones you've already heard before? Would be interested in seeing evidence (for or against) the theory I just shared above.

I listen to new ones, it has to be something new because otherwise my mind would wander and the benefit would be lost. Meditations I sometimes redo though.

The Velvet Underground's self-titled album (with Candy Says and Pale Blue Eyes on it — although I must warn you against The Murder Mystery if you're prone to paranoia!) is incredibly relaxing. Also early Leonard Cohen, especially Songs of Leonard Cohen, any Mogwai, and, possibly my greatest recent sleep-related discovery, Tom Waits Orphans (the Bawlers disc). Beautiful, beautiful, beautiful sleepy music. Listen to a few tracks on Spotify to see if it's your thing — I love it!

I'm very much the same. Music keeps my brain ticking and awake whereas if I listen to radio broadcasts or podcasts I fall asleep much quicker…even commentaries on DVD's work. lol

I use classical sooting music, no words unless made up ones such as Karl Jenkins' Adiemus stuff.

My Chemical Romance, FM Static, and Lost Prophets work for me. Especially FM Static's new CD.

Not for me. 🙁 Any noise that isn't background noise (like the radiator etc) will keep me awake/ wake me up.

While I was in bed the other night, I had my phone on charge and for some reason the ac/dc was making a squealing noise. The noise reminded of Plug In Baby by Muse and I was up straight away. It's an awesome song, but definitely not a soothing one 🙂
