I am a single female living in Seattle originally from Indiana. I am here because in the last year I have been having really bad insomnia. I have had other sleeping issues for the last ten years but the last couple years things have been getting worse. I have issues with night terrors but pretty much have that under control. I have problems waking up a lot at night, but generally can go back. I think this is still detrimental because I have sleep apnea and I think most of my awakenings are during REM sleep which may be shorting me on REM sleep. I also have trouble sleeping more than six hours which wouldn't be so awful if I didn't have sleep apnea so my short sleep is not really restorative. I have been having trouble sleeping with the cpap.

I have been seeing a sleep dr but now I am referred to a psychiatrist who specializes in CBT and helping people adjust to CPAP. I am still waiting to get an appointment and in the mean time I am working on some sleep hygiene and CBT principals. I think that is my best hope, esp since I find most sleep meds really no fun with too many icky side effects.

I am looking forward to have a place to interact with other people with the same issues. I find that my family and friends are supportive to a point but just really don't know the misery that insomnia can cause. I want to find others who can better understand and help. I am so very tired of hearing “Well, are you exercising?” Really? Really? I can't manage to cook my dinner after work or leave the house unless necessary and you want to tell me I should exercise? Exercise can be good for sleep but in the last two years I had time when I could exercise and it never made me tired enough to sleep any more hours or sleep any better. I do want to be able to exercise again but it is frustrating to keep explaining this to people.

I am glad to be here and look forward to getting help and possibly helping others.

      Jen

Welcome Jen glad you found us, hope our little community can be of some comfort and help to you, there's a wealth of information and support to be gained here 🙂

I understand completely what you're saying about family. Mine have always been the same. Supportive but never really understanding. They think insomnia is a case of having a few bad nights or having a bad sleeping routine.

Used to irritate me when my mum would nag me and say “you should stay awake all day after being awake all night then you'll sleep the next night”.. doesn't quite work like that mum thanks 😆

As for exercising, sometimes I found it had the opposite effect. After exercising I felt more alert, awake and pumped up and it just made me restless, have you found the same sometimes?

Look forward to reading your posts!
