I have joined this group on behalf of my son who sustained a severe hockey injury in July 2018. Along with whiplash, neck & shoulder injuries he right away developed insomnia. We have seen many doctors including naturopaths who have prescribed lots of sleep meds but still to this day he does not sleep with the meds. Needless to say his life has changed dramatically no longer able to work, no social time very isolated in trying to correct this. He can go days with no sleep and never gets tired eyes or tired symptoms although his body feels weak. He is currently tapering his only medication that sometimes will give him 2-3 hours sleep and then he’s wide awake and cannot go back. I am hoping to learn what others may be doing to cope with this terrible illness. I believe what he is dealing with is Post Concussion Syndrome.

Have you discussed cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia (CBT-I) with your son’s doctor?

When does your son typically go to bed at night, when does he get out of bed to start his day, and how many hours of sleep would you say he gets on a typical night?

Typically 11 :30 pm gets up around 8am . Some nights he gets 1-3 hrs others none . He is currently tapering a benzo will complete this in approx 2 months. His Vitamin D level is a low 50 despite taking supplements so maybe he is not absorbing due to acid reflux. I know this can cause sleep issues as well. Just finished a 6 month PPI med for his digestive health he is now gluten free and watches what he eats.

With that bedtime and rise time, we can see that your son is allotting around eight-and-a-half hours for sleep — that’s a long period of time to be allotting for sleep! If your son currently gets around three hours of sleep at night, we can see that allotting over eight hours for sleep is only guaranteeing up to five hours of wakefulness during the night.

A good first step might be to reduce the amount of time he allots for sleep to around five-and-a-half hours. This will help build sleep drive and reduce the amount of time he spends awake during the night.

You can learn more about this on the sleep restriction page.

            I hope this helps.
