Have had chronic insomnia for about a year. Formally diagnosed this past winter. I am one of those who falls asleep easily enough, but is up a few hours later.

I've been on all the sleep meds and Ambien CR was the only one that helped, but the sleep doctor would only allow me to use it for 2 months. As far as all of the techniques I have read online – none do anything to get me back to sleep. Life is a wreck, I obviously have depression as well, and I found this site out of desperation on a Google search and it just looked like a much more decent community than some other places I have visited. Seems like the people here actually listen, understand, and if I'm lucky, might have new strategies to cope with or even fix my issue. What I do know is that my problem is anxiety related, but the anxiety does not have an identifiable source.

Anyway, I wanted to do the right thing and give my introduction and story. I look forward to seeing all this board has to offer! 🙂

Hi Martin and thank you for the welcome as well as the site.

I'm awakening during the nightduet to stress and anxiety according to a psychiatrist as well as a sleep specialist. I have an anxiety disorder which I'm on a pretty hefty dose of antianxiety meds for. Sleep study showed nothing wrong with my breathing. I'm sure that Insomnia Land has plenty of people like me that know how lousy insomnia is, but would be nice to know that I'm not the only one with early wakings due to psychological issues like anxiety/stress/depression. (they all seem to go hand in hand from what I have been told). Of course, I'd love to find some type of remedy or at least some way to get more hours of sleep in each night also! It feels good to be among others like me, though. I can't believe I didn't look for a message board sooner.

Hi Gegatso…Welcome to Insomnia Land. Everyone here can totally understand what you're going through. I've given up talking to people who are not insomniacs. They just sort of look at you as if there's something abnormal going on. They offer advice like drinking warm milk. I wish I could offer some help with your problem. I can only tell you how well I understand. Your problem is very similar to mine. I usually fall asleep fairly quickly, but sleep for about an hour and have trouble going back to sleep. When I do go back to sleep,I'm awake again in another hour or two. 4:00 a.m. seems to be my final awakening for the day. Not a very good way to start the da. My insomnia is also due to anxiety which has been difficult if not impossible to overcome. I too have tried all the strategies for treating insomnia, and have been to a sleep specialist as well as a sleep therapist. Ambien doesn't even work well for me.
