hey, I’m new to this forum but pretty much have been struggling with insomnia for about 10 years and has been progressively worsening. I can’t remeber the last time i got a solid night sleep without waking up or tossing and turning. If I don’t take any prescribed medication or otc medication, I won’t sleep. I’ve tried and stay away the whole night which leaves me tired and cranky at work. I’m currently a nurse working 2 jobs and then going to grad school and starting clinicals. I’m in desperate need of help and tired of taking all these medications.

You need help and pills are not the answer. You did not need pills before you had insomnia and you do not need pills now to get over this condition. The problem is psychological, therefore the solution is also psychological and is not in your physiology. That’s why pills don’t help. There’s nothing wrong with your brain chemistry so you don’t need a drug. The answer is in getting the right kind of therapy specifically for insomnia – Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Insomnia (CBT-I). Find a therapist in your local area who specializes in CBT-I or hire Martin Reed, the founder of this website. He helped me tremendously and I am now sleeping 7 hours a night. Also, read Sasha Stephen’s book, The Effortless Sleep Method.

Welcome to the forum, Andrea — and I am sorry to hear about your long-term struggles with sleep. It certainly sounds as though you have a busy schedule — are you able to allot enough time for sleep and follow a predictable sleep schedule?

Although it may feel like you aren’t capable of sleeping without sleeping pills, that is not true — you are able to sleep, you have not lost your ability to sleep, and you can enjoy natural, restorative sleep again. You were not born with insomnia, so you do not have to live with insomnia.

Have you looked into CBT for insomnia? If you are determined to improve your sleep, it is likely the best solution for improving your sleep over the long term.

If you are ready to stop struggling with insomnia you can enroll in the online insomnia coaching course right now! If you would prefer ongoing phone or video coaching calls as part of a powerful three month program that will help you reclaim your life from insomnia, consider applying for the Insomnia Mastery program.

Thanks guys. I have looked into CBT but unfortunately it is not covered under my health insurance…It’s very expensive out of pocket and an expense I cannot swing right now.  Are there other more affordable resources to be directed to?

If you are committed and dedicated, you can implement CBT-I techniques yourself using resources such as those you can find on this website (under the ‘Resources’ tab in the navigation menu) or through my free insomnia sleep training course. Alternatively, there are some good books out there that help guide you through CBT-I techniques.

You can also look into working one-on-one with sleep coaches who use CBT-I techniques (such as myself). My online insomnia coaching course is available for $69 per week. Alternatively, I offer a phone coaching package for $299.
