Hi everybody.  I am new here and have had insomnia for the past 2-3 weeks.

It all started when my health started to decline, and I had some serious anxiety about it.  That was about 2.5 weeks ago.  That very night I couldn’t sleep, and since then it’s been about every other night that my sleep has been very light, maybe 2-3 hours each of those nights.

I have a Therapist, and we are practicing mindfulness.  I try the deep breathing exercises too.  But sometimes it just doesn’t work.

I enjoy sleeping, and would like to get back to normal patterns.  Anyone like to offer any tips/advice?

      Thanks so much!

        Check out these books:

The Effortless Sleep Method by Sasha Stephens

The Sleep Book by Guy Meadows

These guys know how to cure insomnia although their methods are a little different. So does Martin Reed, the founder of this website. I had terrible, severe insomnia and now am sleeping 7 hours each night because of his help. Guy Meadows will help you learn how to apply mindfulness specifically to insomnia.

Welcome to the forum, and I’m sorry to hear about your current struggles with sleep. Health-related worry and anxiety will often disrupt sleep. In fact, this is quite normal and our sleep will usually recover over time by itself.

Mindfulness can help promote relaxation — but it is a skill, and requires practice. It’s also important to bear in mind that the ultimate goal of relaxation is relaxation, not sleep!

The good news is that your sleep issues started relatively recently. So, if you take steps to tackle them now using evidence-based CBT-I techniques, you will find it much easier to get your sleep back on track because your insomnia hasn’t had time to become too entrenched.

I’m using a combination of CBT and talking with a Therapist.  The CBT tends to calm me down, and the Therapist sometimes gives me some insights as to how I’m thinking.

I’ve also been lucky enough to have great friends, and to have found this forum!  It is helpful to be able to vent about frustrating parts of one’s life.

That was how I got this way as well.   I am glad you found help quickly. I did not.  They dragged their feet for months.   I made progress when I started to do for myself and changed what they told me. That has been reminded me today of such things.
