      Hi All,

My sleep is the worst it’s been in 19 yrs of chronic insomnia, due to unforeseen stress and PTSD and the bedroom has become a place of anxiety at bedtime so I thought it was time to explore how to improve this.

      Thanks

        Thanks for joining the forum!

Our mind quickly establishes a flight or fight instinct when it experiences anxiety so associating your bed with frustration and anxiousness at bedtime can certainly create a turbulent situation. What actions are you taking to create a more relaxing environment?

Have you considered implementing stimulus control ( https://insomniacoach.com/stimulus-control-therapy/ ) along with having a restricted sleep window with CBT-I?

          Hi Scott,

Yes, good feedback. As much as realistically possible, I’m spending a lot more time out of bed. I’m in an ongoing unusual living situation that has me in hotels, Airbnb, and soon, living in an RV for a time until my husband and I find land to build a house on (which is all contributing to my sleep difficulties). I don’t have a bedroom, living room etc. But, I can still do this pretty well. I also have a chronic illness and sometimes, I just have to lie down. As for the restricted sleep window, once I’ve landed in our RV, which is more long term, I’ll consider this. I did CBT with a psychologist and never really found it that helpful but I also didn’t connect with the counselling style so it’s probably worth revisiting now.

It does sound like you’re in an unsettled time in your life and that can certainly cause some temporary interruptions in your sleep. This sleep disruption won’t really manifest into a long-term result unless you change your thoughts and behaviors towards your sleep. Once you begin having, “what if…” and anxious thoughts and start going to bed before you’re actually sleepy to accommodate the previous nights sleep, taking naps or canceling social events it can lead to a perpetuation of poor sleep.
