Hi all- I am brand new here and new to Martin’s content as well. I have had chronic insomnia for years in various iterations…trouble falling asleep, trouble staying asleep, and years of using medication that leaves me feeling groggy and still not waking up feeling rested at all. I have co-occurring depression and anxiety and things have gotten so bad that I have taken a leave of absence from work. The last two weeks have been some of the hardest of my life; after stopping the medication I was on I have probably gotten 3 partial nights of sleep in the last 15 days.

All that being said…I feel some hope today. I feel like I have an opportunity to finally really address insomnia the right way. With patience and perseverance and the support of others I think I can do it. I am taking Martins free course and also have local support with a CBT-I specialist. So far I am focused on stimulus control and also trying to stay busy and live my life during the day despite the severe fatigue. I had a breakthrough today (after listening to one of Martin’s podcast episodes) where I realized that my reaction to sensations of fatigue is often despair and worry and that although I can’t control fatigue (or sleep) I can work on controlling my reaction to these things.

Anyways, that’s enough for now, thanks for reading and looking forward to engaging with this community!

      Best,

      Tyler

Sorry to hear how difficult things are for you at the current time. I appreciate you sharing that you feel you now have the opportunity to get to the root of your insomnia by tackling the behaviors and thought processes that can perpetuate sleep disruption.

The fatigue is real and it’s hard — and we have two ways to react to it. We can withdraw from life in an attempt to recover that lost energy (this isn’t usually helpful over the long term) or we can engage in actions that allow us to continue to move toward the kind of life we want to live, even in the presence of that fatigue.

I think the latter often helps us get closer to living a richer, engaging, and more meaningful life — even when in the presence of all the difficult stuff that comes with being a human being.
