I'm a 49 year old male, married with 4 kids, practicing engineering in the field of Construction. My “non-sleep” episodes began about 3 months ago. On the average of once a week I start to crash at 9 pm but lay wide awake until I leave for work the next morning at 5:30 am. The othe nights I probably average 3 to 6 hours of sleep.

I attribute this eratic sleeping habit to 2, ready to be 3, kids in college (I'm paying) and my fathers battle with cancer. Unfortunately the mind never has a chance to relax.

After a sleepless night last night I decided to get a perscription for Ambien to see if that helps……..I understand that this is not the permanent fix, but being part of this website I hope will give me other insights on what I can do to help myself…….

      Thanks

Welcome to Insomnia Land. Did you discuss any alternatives to medication with your doctor? As you seem to be aware, Ambien doesn't solve the root cause of insomnia, but it can help you fall asleep if you are so sleep deprived you need to be 'forced' to get some rest. Do keep us updated, and know that you have plenty of support here at Insomnia Land. We all look after one another here – so feel free to get involved in discussions and become an active member of the community.

Alideal: probably the easiest way to learn about Ambien is to Google it. From what I've seen it doesn't appear to to be the long term solution since its habit forming. The reason I'm using it is for the immediate short term need. I joined this site to try and find a long term solution. Thanks!!!

Hi and welcome. It sounds as if you have a lot on your plate. I hope you find the support you need here. If noting else, we at least all know what you are going through. Thankfully, if I'm having a bad night or five, I know that I can always come here and read and even write if I feel compelled. It's a nice place to be. I haven't talked to anyone, yet that isn't very nice and willing to share their experience so that others can benefit, or just feel at home.

Hello and welcome to insomnia land. From your post it's easy to conclude that *worrying* keeps you sleepless at night. I can only advise you to leave those worries of yours surely and slowly behind, because worrying is totally unproductive. It makes you sick in the long run and you won't be good to anybody. Worrying has never solved a problem. I am sure you know that yourself, but sometimes we need to hear it from someone else.

In 2011 I suffered from insomnia for about two months; it has since resolved and I just stick around to read all the news. As a sleeping aid I recommend

*5-HTP* which is a naturally occuring amino acid; it converts into serotonin. It is certainly better than sleeping drugs which are all habit forming.

                  Hiya, welcome to the forum.

I fully understand how worrying can keep you awake at night. You lay there desperate for sleep, but your brain just won't shut up will it. It's so unfair when everyone else is snoring away blissfully. I wake up 2 or 3 times every night and it takes me ages to go back to sleep again. I'm laying there thinking about all sorts of things. Then by the time I start to finally drift off it's time to get up.

Great to have you here with us. 🙂
