I’m a newbie to Martin Reed/insomnia coach. As a someone who has been plagued by insomnia on and off for years, I feel like I’ve exhausted (so to speak) all options and tried seemingly every remedy.
I’m happy and relieved to have discovered Martin and will say unequivocally that his advice/guidance has been very helpful. That said, I readily admit to feeling like whenever I make progress it seems like I am back to square one the next day; e.g. I may sleep well one night but not the next and so on.
One of my biggest challenges is what to do with my time when I can’t sleep at night. More specifically, when I can’t sleep and get to the point where I drag my ass out of bed and head to the couch, sometimes I am too tired to read. I’ve tried listening to podcasts, various relaxation exercises, all with mixed results. Sometimes in desperation I will resort to sleeping pills and even though they are pretty consistent in knocking me out, I tend to regret it the following day. I would be curious to hear about what others have had success with in terms of what they do to relax and pass the time during periods of nighttime wakefulness. Thanks.

It sounds like you’ve made tremendous progress with your sleep issue!

Setbacks can be tough and upsetting but it’s all part of the process and says, “you’re still human!”. The only way for you not to have continued success is for you to abandon all of the techniques that you’ve learned and had success with.

What results are you expecting when you get out of bed to listen to a podcast, exercise, etc? The more effort you put into getting a good night’s sleep, the harder sleep becomes, if you’re expecting those activities to generate sleepiness. If you’re looking for relaxing activities instead of sleeping strategies, have you considered watching a non-stimulating tv show, coloring and crafting?

Thanks Scott. I appreciate your input.
I’ve made some progress of late for sure, thanks largely to Martin. I’ve got a long way to go but I’m confident that as long as I to stick with the plan, I’ll get to where I need to go.

I’ve only really just started my journey of implementing sleep restriction etc. so I’m still in the midst of figuring out what works for me (in terms of relaxing activities) when I get out of bed at night due to sleeplessness. I’m finding reading tough as it requires too much focus and is ultimately not very relaxing for me. I’ve found that some podcasts, listening to someone else read (like on calm.com for example) to be more effective. I’ve been avoiding watching TV but I think I’ll give it a whirl, as long as it’s not overly stimulating. Might even give the arts and crafts a shot as you suggested!
